How to Create a Successful Program or Product

If you are like me, it is easy to get lost in hundreds of ideas for what you want to create for your clients. Often, having too many ideas can create overwhelm and keep you stuck, unable to make a decision or move forward.

It is also important to choose wisely, because not all of your ideas are created equal. Your offer needs to be something that your clients need and will be willing to pay for. It also needs to be something you feel good about.

The following steps are ones I use with my clients, whether they are at the startup stage and creating their first product/program or more experienced and looking for the next right thing.

List Your Skills, Gifts, and Knowledge – We should all have one of these lists as a living document that we add to regularly. It is a wonderful business resource and can be used to lift your energy when you need a confidence boost. In this situation, we will use it as a menu of things you can offer.

Visualize Your Ideal Client – The one you really can get excited about working with. Describe them in detail including demographics, world views, and personality traits.

Ask Yourself What Your Ideal Client’s Biggest Challenges Are – What keeps them up at night or makes them cry?  What do they wish they had? What do they want to learn? What will they be really motivated to receive help with and pay for?  Make a list of all of the things that come to mind.

List the Solutions You Have to Offer  You can use your list of skills and knowledge as a resource. Once completed, go through the list looking for the most powerful ideas and choose one to three to focus on.

Test the Viability of Your Ideas

  • Use Google Keyword Tools provides search statistics.
  • Check Amazon for books on the subject and how well they are doing.
  • Search your subject online. If there are a lot of ads, people are probably buying.
  • Ask yourself if your ideal clients are actively looking for a solution to this problem.
  • Can your ideal client group afford what you want to offer?

Choose One Idea that Tests Well – Create a list of 5 -10 steps that would guide your future clients in solving their challenge. This will be the outline for your product or program.

Name It Well – Create a name that is catchy and speaks to the benefits your clients will receive. Using a headline analyzer can help you choose the one that works best.

Complete Your Product – Use the steps you already created as a framework to build on and then format your product to look attractive and professional.

Start Talking about Your Product Right Away – It’s never too early to start marketing. Your program doesn’t even have to be complete. You may be inspired with new things to add after hearing what people have to say and if people enroll, you will be highly motivated to commit to a target date for completion.

Staying true to your gifts and your ideal client’s needs will help you create a product or program that both you and your future clients will love.
